Why the Same Patterns Keep Showing Up

Why the Same Patterns Keep Showing Up

July 19, 2026

One of the men on our Global Call this past week shared something that I think all of us could relate to.

He had been through a painful divorce several years ago, and now he finds himself in a new relationship with a woman who has given him no reason not to trust her. She's kind, honest, supportive, and completely different from his previous partner.

Yet he still catches himself questioning her intentions. Wondering if she'll eventually leave him or, even worse, cheat on him as his past wife did. He’s looking for something to go wrong.

As he was talking, it struck me that he wasn't really seeing his new relationship for what it was.

He was seeing it through the lens of his last one, and it made me realize that we all do this.

Very few of us see life objectively. We see it through a collection of experiences, beliefs, fears, and stories we've accumulated over the course of our lives. These become the lenses through which we interpret everything around us, often without realizing we're wearing them.

If somewhere along the way you learned that people can't be trusted, you'll unconsciously look for evidence that confirms it.

If you believe life is a constant struggle, you'll naturally notice every obstacle more than every opportunity that comes your way.

If your deepest belief is that you're not enough, you'll hear criticism louder than encouragement, even when both are present.

The interesting part is that these beliefs often operate beneath our Awareness. We don't question them because they don't feel like beliefs. They feel like reality.

This is why Awareness is the foundation of everything we talk about inside The Balanced Man Method.

Before you can change your life, you have to understand the lens you're looking through.

One simple exercise I've found helpful is to answer three questions as quickly and honestly as you can. Don't give the answer you wish were true. Give the first answer that comes to mind.

Life is...

Money is...

Relationships are...

Pay attention to your immediate response.

You might write, Life is hard.

Money is scarce, or Money doesn’t grow trees.

Relationships always end in disappointment, or Relationships are a struggle.

Or maybe your answers are completely different, and so they will be.

The point isn't whether your answers are right or wrong. The point is that they're revealing.

They begin to expose the unconscious beliefs that have quietly shaped how you experience the world.

Most of us spend years trying to change our circumstances without ever examining the lens through which we're seeing those circumstances. We blame our job, our partner, our finances, or our luck, without asking whether our interpretation of those experiences is being filtered through beliefs we adopted years ago.

This is where Awareness naturally leads into Agency.

Once you become aware of the lens you're wearing, you have a choice. You can continue seeing life through old stories that no longer serve you, or you can begin taking responsibility for the way those stories shape your decisions, your relationships, and ultimately your future.

Agency isn't about blaming yourself for everything that's happened in your life.

It's about recognizing that you have the power to question the beliefs you've been living from.

Because if you never question the lens, you'll keep recreating the same patterns, while believing it's simply the world that's happening to you.

The circumstances may change. The people may change. The jobs may change.

But the patterns often remain remarkably familiar.

Next week, we will explore the next step.

Once you've become aware of the lens you're looking through, how do you begin changing it?

Because changing your life isn't always about changing your circumstances.

Sometimes it's about learning to see them differently.
